We begin here on purpose. Before we talk about dating, freedom, or preparation, we have to talk about your Belovedness — because every other issue in this magazine rests on this one. This is the foundation. Everything else is built on it.
Before your mother chose your name. Before a teacher called you gifted or struggling. Before a partner said I love you or I'm leaving — there was a Voice. It spoke a single word over you that the rest of your life has been an attempt to hear again. The word was Beloved. Not Beloved-if. Not Beloved-when. Spoken once, in eternity, and never retracted.
At the Jordan, before Jesus preached a sermon or healed a single body, the Father opened the heavens: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. The order of that sentence is the whole gospel. Belovedness came before the ministry. You were Beloved before you were ever a partner, a parent, a leader, a name on anyone's list.
There is the Beloved God speaks — eternal, unearned. And there is the beloved the culture sells — a partner who will finally validate you. One is the foundation. The other was never built to carry that weight. A spouse can love you. A spouse cannot Beloved you. Only the Father does that, and He already has.
There is a rendering of Romans 2:4 that reaches under the verse: His resolute refusal to let go of us is because He continues to hear the echo of His likeness in us. God does not love you because you performed your way in. He loves you because when He looks at you, He hears Himself.
This week, find five quiet minutes and ask honestly: Lord, show me — me. Then don't fill the silence. Let the Voice that came first speak, and write down what you hear.
