Most of what gets said about “preparing” in singleness quietly assumes the season only matters because of what it might lead to. We want to say something different in this issue.
The character being formed in you right now is the prize — not the spouse you might attract. If covenant comes, that character will hold it. If it doesn't, the character was still worth every hour of its formation. Preparation is not getting ready for someone. Preparation is becoming someone.
Covenant capacity is the ability of a soul to hold love faithfully over time — not chemistry, but the formed ability to keep your word, stay present when it's hard, forgive when it costs something. And it isn't a marriage skill. It's Christian character, the same muscle that makes you a faithful friend and a trustworthy member of the body of Christ.
Four marks are being formed in you right now, whether or not anyone shows up to receive them. Faithfulness — the long obedience of small promises kept. Communion — the capacity to be deeply known, by God first. Conflict handled with honesty instead of reaction. Sacrificial love — laying down preference for another's good, ten thousand times, in the ordinary hours.
How you fight is how you'll fight forever, unless the Spirit teaches you otherwise. The good news: the same work forms you into a deeper friend, sibling, and presence in every relationship you already have — married or not.
Pick the one mark that's least formed in you right now. Choose one small, concrete way to practice it this week — not for a future spouse, for the person already in front of you.
